Durham Performing Arts Center & Bull City Burger & Brewery

One of my most favorite things to do with my girls is see a show at DPAC (Durham Performing Arts Center)…specficially broadway shows.  My mother in law is a huge fan of these girl’s nights also, lucky me!

Friday of last week we were treated to dinner and a show!  42nd Street is a classic and a must see for any broadway fan.  I had seen videos and know many of the songs performed but had never seen this show in person, and what a treat it was!  The house was packed and they didn’t disappoint.  The content was a bit racy for the girls…but the art behind it was more important so we let it go and just prepared ourselves for

any questions…luckily there weren’t any.

We started our evening at Bull City Burger and Brewery.  We had found them online and chose this location because of it’s kid-friendly claims…and it was accurate.  It was perfect for what we needed that night.  Fresh local organic food and drinks, local brews, and kid-friendly atmosphere.  We had a couple of hours before the show when we arrived at 6pm, but the place was already buzzing.

Bull City Burger & Brewery also offers a brewery tour for 21 and over.  I plan to revisit sometime with just the hubster to check it out.  I love their TOP TEN things to know about BCBB, enjoy reading it here.  They do everything the right way in my opinion…would love to have something like this a bit more local, but I’ll settle for the occasional treat when in the area.

So why is it kid-friendly? The atmosphere first and foremost is loud…enough said right?  Kids can easily move around without disturbing neighbors.  Seating is family style on most tables and the menu consists of burgers, dogs and fries (although all natural and much better for you than Mickey D’s).  That should be enough.  But if it isn’t, they have a kids area equipped with toys, games, coloring sheets and a mini kitchen.  DREAMY!  We didn’t have the boys with us but if we had they would’ve probably played there the whole time.

The girls loved their soda machine of all natural pop, such a great alternative to the regular stuff.  The beer was delicious and the wine machine…a whole other reason for me to revisit again.  You can purchase a card to dispense your own wine from their selections.  Pretty darn cool if you ask me.

I had a burger…it was AMAZING…not much more I can say about that.  I created my own which I was a bit worried about since it was kind of “off-menu” but it turned out delicious.  I highly recommend the aioli sauce on your burger.

Lets talk about DPAC.  The staff is probably the most friendly of any event staff I’ve encountered.  They were so nice to the girls asking them questions about their experience watching broadway shows and helping us to our seats.  Did you know that you can preorder/pay for a beverage or snack at intermission and they’ll have it ready for you when you come out?  No waiting in line!  They have an attendant in the bathroom during intermission as well to help make the line go quickly.  I’m a fan.

You can bring food and drinks into the theatre, another kid “must”.  The girls sat and enjoyed the show with no problem.  Parking can be confusing, we learned that last visit when we didn’t have cash on hand.  If you plan to park close to DPAC have cash.  Some attendants can accept cards, but not all work every time…so just bring cash.  This trip we parked for free near the restaurant and walked to the show.  It was a pretty perfect night.  As we were leaving we were able to enjoy the fireworks over Durham Bulls stadium.  I am looking forward to coming back with all of the kids for a baseball game soon.
