Sandhills MOPS- Making Better Moms
If you speak with any MOPS momma, especially one from Sandhills MOPS, she will most likely tell you how the Mothers of Preschoolers group changed her life. Specifically, she will tell you how she is a better mom because she received support and encouragement from the moment she first arrived at a Wednesday morning MOPS gathering.
September to May, Sandhills MOPS meets twice monthly on Wednesday mornings from 9:15 – 11:15 at Christ Community Church in Pinehurst. The meetings serve as a child free time to relax and connect with moms from various backgrounds within the Moore County community. A typical meeting includes a warm welcome and devotional, social time while enjoying a delicious brunch that the moms take turns preparing, followed by a guest speaker or demonstration on topics relevant to moms today. The moms also have a chance to explore their creativity at many meetings, when everyone participates in a fun group craft. Moms enjoy these activities for two uninterrupted hours while their children are lovingly cared for in a Sunday school environment right down the hall in the MOPPETS child care program. Sandhills MOPS understands the need for ‘mom time’, to allow access to support resources and meaningful conversation that build relationships. This past year, moms had an opportunity to dress up in black and white attire for a special spring Tea and Testimony meeting.
In addition to meetings, moms can participate in special activities for families, play dates, mom’s night outs, and service projects. The goal is for every mom to leave a MOPS gathering recharged and her love tank filled with God’s love, so that she may in turn be a better mom, making a better world.
Sandhills MOPS is chartered by MOPS International, a Christian non-Profit organization that believes better moms make a better world. 8 moms attended the first MOPS meeting in 1973, and since then the organization has grown into an international community with over 3,860 MOPS groups in the United States and in 29 countries. MOPS International strives to make better moms by partnering with local churches to encourage and equip mothers with young children to reach their potential as mothers, women, and leaders while developing a relationship with Christ. When a mom joins a local MOPS group she also becomes a member of MOPS International.
Each year, MOPS International develops a special theme, which is used by local MOPS groups as a foundation for connecting moms and for sharing the love of Christ throughout the year. This year’s theme is:
Seeing the light in the darkness and choosing to live courageously in both. It is opening our eyes to wonder and choosing hope over fear. Starry Eyed is significant acts of kindness that send ripples of light into the world. It is a choice to live fully and wholly and to breathe our way back to life. If you feel anxious and don’t know why … If you are busy and distracted from the things you truly care about … If you are restless for an unexpected encounter with God … If you long to feel alive, to regain a sense of wonder, to hope a little freer and to be a powerful force of kindness in the world, then we’d love for you to join us in becoming Starry Eyed.
This year we will run wildly toward wonder, hope and kindness because We Are the Starry Eyed and we choose to see the light.
In an effort expand the MOPS outreach to even more mommas in the community, a second MOPS group is coming to the Sandhills for the first time this year! Grace Church MOPS will meet twice monthly on Tuesday mornings from 9:15 to 11:00 at Grace Church in Southern Pines.
Currently the Sandhills MOPS and Grace Church MOPS are on summer break, but the leadership teams are hard at work planning an eventful and spiritually rich 2016-2017 year. If you are a mom with a child who is kindergarten age or younger, and you live in the Sandhills, then please contact one of the local MOPS groups for more info and ask how to join. Come hungry for the tools and relationships to make you a better mom... but also come hungry for food, because the brunch is out of this world!
