One of the most important things we can do as parents is teach our children to swim. Water safety and survival can literally be life or death.
An excerpt from the CDC’s website states that “from 2005-2014 there were an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings” in the US. “One in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger.” Those statistics alone are enough to encourage most to enroll their child in swim lessons. Swim lessons can also be fun! My girls learned to swim at FirstHealth Fitness when they were respectively 4 years old. Luckily my oldest son (4) taught himself, probably due to trying to keep up with the girls all summer at my mother in law’s pool. We are entering the summer with our last baby at 18 months old so you’ll find tips as well here for keeping baby safe during swim time.
If you’re looking to get started with swim lessons there is something for everyone in our area. Here are some resources to enroll your child in swim lessons.
FirstHealth Fitness: Lessons are available year round. Updated 5/22/2016
Cost per session: $50 members/$65 community
“Our Child Swim Lessons for ages 3-12 meet twice per week for 3-weeks. Each class is 40 minutes and is limited to 6-10 kids. Registration is held the week prior to the class start date. Our classes are offered at 3:40, 4:20, 5:05, 5:50, 6:35, 7:15 but the levels offered during each time frame will change monthly to accommodate the needs of participants.”
Be sure to register as early as you can as slots fill up quickly. Those that have been previous enrolled do get priority when requesting the next session so once you get a slot it’ll be easier to keep enrolling subsequent sessions.
Sandhills Sandsharks: Swim School is offered throughout the year for children 3 and up. The instructors are friendly, enthusiastic teachers with extensive swim backgrounds.
